OK. So what does it cost?
Normally, in my experience, counselling/psychotherapy
costs somewhere between £30 and £75 (even over £100!) per session
(a session is usually around 50 minutes).
That sounds a lot (it certainly did to me when I first had to pay), but for
many counsellors and psychotherapists the fee is their only source of income,
and from it they have to pay all their own costs. Some will, however, offer
cheaper rates to people on low incomes.
If you cant afford to pay, you can still find a good counsellor or therapist. Your doctor might be able to refer you to one, and some organisations offer free counselling to people - ask at your GPs, or your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
You will normally agree with your counsellor or psychotherapist how often you will meet (generally this is once a week) and for how many sessions (it might be as few as four or six sessions, or you might agree to meet until you feel you have achieved what you want).
If you would like to see me, I ask for £65 per session for individuals (this is sometimes negotiable according to individual circumstances), and £80 for couples.
Short-term counselling is £390 for six sessions, or £350 if paid in one lump sum.
