Short-term counselling
When we are faced with problems and questions that need some kind of decision, or where something is going round and round our heads and we need to talk it through with someone so that we can work out what to do, we might not need longer-term therapy: we might just need to see someone for a few sessions, someone who isn't family or a friend.
About half of the work I do is this kind of short-term, focused work and I have a good deal of experience working with people to help them clarify their thoughts and feelings. A lot of people come through counselling offered by their employer - it's worth you checking what your company might offer - or you can decide on some short-term work for yourself.
The big advantage, of course, is that you know the cost, and it's fixed. You have a clear aim in the work and you know you can commit to the number of sessions.
The usual model of working is six sessions (occasionally four): in the first session we talk through and agree your aims, then we work on them (I warn you, I sometimes give homework!), and then we review at the end to see how you feel you've progressed. It isn't always possible to make a decision and see it through in so short a time, but it's usually possible to get your bearings and work out the steps forward.
I will always be clear with you whether short-term work is suitable so that you can make the decision that's right for you. If you do decide on short-term work, then the fee is £390 for six sessions, or £350 if paid in one lump sum.
